“Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you” (John 6:53). The first time you read this verse you may have thought the same thing as those who were present at the words of Jesus, “This is an hard saying; who can hear it?” We know that Christ cannot be endorsing cannibalism, but what is it that He means? While Evangelist John Van Gelderen allows that our initial response to this passage is to recoil at the reference of feasting on Christ’s flesh and drinking His blood, he then draws simple, yet profound, analogies from something that all humans and cultures have in common: food. Open your Bible to John chapter 6 and follow along as Brother Van Gelderen helps us to “digest” the profound meaning in this picture of abiding.
