God sets up judges to rule over civil matters and puts leaders in the church to judge spiritual matters and carry out church discipline. (See Romans 13 and I Corinthians 5:12–6:3.) In the future, “saints shall judge the world” and also “judge angels.” However, Christ did not come “to judge the world, but to save the world” (John 12:47) in a demonstration of God’s love. He wants this to be our focus as well. Therefore, He commands:
“Judge not that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?” (Matthew 7:1–3).
